Position Summary

 

The Director of Trucking is the most senior trucking related position for the organization. This individual will be expected to provide strategic planning and execution of major transportation initiatives and will establish and drive the long-term vision for the Company's transportation needs and services. This position will ensure sound decision making, implementation, and assume budgetary responsibility throughout the trucking group working hand in hand with the Director of Transportation over barge and rail.

This position is responsible for daily operations and both transactional and contractual services. These operations include both in-house and the network of contractors necessary to accommodate this highly variable business function.

 

The essential functions of the Director of Trucking include:

 

  • Develop strategies for road transportation both inbound and outbound, including systems support;

  • Accountable for all day-to-day decisions regarding trucking performance, costs, pricing, and procurement of equipment and services;

  • Provide vision and leadership from the Trucking function to the Director of Transportation and Executive Team to contribute to the optimum performance of the Company's transportation needs and financial performance;

  • Manage the dispatchers, driver managers, drivers and associated mechanics to provide updates of pricing, transit and shipment visibility, information systems, analysis of industry trends, and competitor activity to achieve margin improvement, pricing effectiveness, and improved service;

  • In conjunction with the Director of Transportation, develop, solidify and maintain an appropriate transportation organization structure that supports the needs of the business. This includes staffing and subsequent development of personnel.

  • Select, develop and motivate qualified staff to effectively carry out department functions and provide for the continuity of managerial and specialized skills. Supervise staff in all areas of responsibility including recruiting for open positions, making recommendations concerning hiring and dismissals, conducting annual performance reviews, recommending salary increases and promotions where appropriate and developing and administering training and development plans for department staff;

  • Maintain knowledge of developments in new regulations issued by DOT as well as other local and state agencies;

  • Support the Director of Transportation to create and manage the department's budget and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget;

  • Attend relevant conferences and seminars on transportation/DOT to maintain a current perspective and provide timely input of new developments to the Director Transportation and Executive staff;

  • Ensure a system for proper retention, disposition, safekeeping and control of all DOT compliance materials;

  • Develop change management strategies to affect organizational changes which embrace the changing business environment; and

  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Company at its discretion.
